Debate: Can the Internet Be Made Safe?
History & Social Policy

In many ways, the internet is still living up to its original promise to be a place where people can express themselves without judgment. Online anonymity also allows whistle blowers and activists to speak out without fear of harmful consequences to themselves.
Yet it is this very anonymity that allows bad actors and trolls to spread racist slurs, rape threats, sexual harassment, misinformation; lowering the quality of public discourse and creating a culture of hatred and mistrust.
Would removing the cloak of online anonymity be a solution to making the internet safer? Or could it do more harm than good?
Join the debate, hear the arguments and decide for yourself.
Speakers: Margaret Hodge MP, Jamie Bartlett and David Babbs
Chaired by Manveen Rana
This event was recorded in February 2022.
